WHAT IS KALEIDOSCOPE?

Kaleidoscope

An astounding new feat of storytelling from Brian Selznick, the award-winning creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck.

A ship. A garden. A library. A key. In Kaleidoscope, the incomparable Brian Selznick presents the story of two people bound to each other through time and space, memory and dreams. At the center of their relationship is a mystery about the nature of grief and love which will look different to each reader. Kaleidoscope is a feat of storytelling that illuminates how even the wildest tales can help us in the hardest times.

Much of Kaleidoscope was inspired by a real place I love very much, Port Eliot, in Cornwall, England. My friend Cathy St. Germans lived there for many years with her extraordinary husband, the late Perry St. Germans, whose family has owned the house for for more than four hundred and fifty years. Anyone familiar with Port Eliot will recognize the gardens, tunnels, hallways, doors, and windows in my book from this beloved house in Cornwall. Cathy and Perry ran an arts and music festival on the grounds of their house, and it was at the Port Eliot Festival that this story began several years ago. My eternal thanks go to Cathy and Perry for that festival, but mostly for their friendship, which changed my life in so many ways.
